Peru-Medical-Internships

Ayush

Medical elective experience abroad is suitable for medical students providing you with invaluable experience in a developing country. Peru is a great place for medical students to learn a lot as treatment, diagnosis and infrastructure is often very different from what you may be used to in developed countries. Our medical placements are designed to give you supervised medical work experience in busy local clinics while also allowing you to experience Peruvian culture, so it’s the perfect immersive travel experience. We can organise medical electives in general medicine, midwifery, physiotherapy as a doctor’s assistant in local clinics.

Our medical elective program allows you to learn about healthcare and medicine on an international level.

Working with local doctors and Peruvian patients in local clinics will give you real-life experience and learning opportunities that will enhance your career while also broadening your horizons to medical problems in South America.

Our medical volunteering program is based in the vibrant and bustling city of Cusco, Peru. The experience will allow you fully immerse yourself in a whole new culture whilst gaining essential work experience to develop in your chosen medical discipline. Taking your medical elective abroad will give you the chance to work in clinics in a supervised environment whilst getting the opportunity to travel, sightsee and meet new like-minded people along the way.

This medical volunteer and internship program in Peru is particularly suitable to those who can speak some Spanish or we will require you to take Spanish lessons. This program has a minimum duration of 4 weeks.

What is involved

While on your placement in Cusco, you’ll work under the supervision of experienced medical professionals with the full support of our team throughout the program. Working in local Peruvian clinics, you’ll work alongside doctors, nurses and medical staff to treat a variety of patients.

Medical or nursing students in the first year or second year students can participate in the following areas within the clinic: taking weight, height, blood pressure, heart rate and temperature, making beds, cleaning, talking with patients, preparing materials, administering vaccinations and sterilizing equipment.
Third and fourth year students can also participate in the following areas: cleaning wounds, giving injections and sutures, consult rooms and specialized departments, assisting doctors taking physicals and histories, giving vaccinations, taking records, drawing blood samples, and basic assistance with physiotherapy.

The placements are from 8am-2pm Monday to Friday, so there is also plenty of opportunity to explore Cusco and travel on weekends.

Usually you will work in public clinics and rotate areas like Nursing, Lab, Topico, Admin, Home Visits, Odontology, Psychology or General Medicine. You can also do malnutrition reduction programs, midwifery, nursing, physiotherapy.
The conditions of the medical placements in Peru are way different than Europe. They don’t have that high standards for patients treatment or check-ups. Here the paperwork is very important and we don’t have a digital platform like in other countries.
The whole experience for the volunteer/intern is meaningful at the end, because we need your help and extra hands to take care of our local community.

There is a minimum requirement of 4 weeks on this medical program and we will require you to take Spanish lessons.

Combine Spanish classes with your placement!

To get the best out of this program we highly recommend taking individual or group Spanish classes.

Email us for rates for Spanish Classes.

Our local team can also help organise Tours around Cusco for you. We highly recommend pre-booking some tours like Machu Picchu as there are entry number restrictions per year.
