Volunteer In Maldives
The Maldives is a truly paradise on earth! One of the most fragile and low lying countries of the world, Maldives is threatened of disappearing with global warming. Its double-chain of coral atolls made up of 2041 distinct coral reefs form 25 natural atolls. The Maldives stretches along 860 km and is 80-120km wide.
The country itself consists of 1192 small islands, 200 of which are currently inhabited. This leaves plenty of uninhabited islands to visit! By land area, the Maldives is the sixth smallest sovereign state in the world, with an estimated 235 km2 of land divided over 1190 islands. The capital of Male, is an urban metropolis crammed onto a relatively small island. Do not fear, however, as the island on which our Volunteer program operates is the complete opposite of this!
Our volunteer in Maldives programs for teaching and community volunteering are located in Huvadhoo Atoll. Because of the remote location of the islands there is a lack of human resources to move forward with a variety of community initiatives. Volunteers in Maldives will have an opportunity to assist the island to advance the interests of the communities to attain basic needs (such as education and healthcare) and to create a solid foundation for sustainable development which will help alleviate poverty that many on the island face.
The locals of Maldives islands are extremely friendly and provide a warm welcome to all visitors. Islanders are grateful for the work which volunteers do and have no trepidation in including them in their daily activities. Volunteers will get an authentic feel for Maldives life here, and it is certainly not an opportunity to pass up!
The islands like the rest of the Maldives, is 100% Muslim, and this plays a large role in everyday life. Many of the islanders are traditionalists, and volunteers will need to adhere to their rules and beliefs. Often this does not interfere with life, although for women there tend to be rather more restrictions. For example, clothes that expose the shoulders or have a low neckline are not allowed in public areas. Acceptance of the beliefs of the islanders will play a major role in your adaptation to island life, but their warm and friendly nature should endear you to them and boundaries between different religions and cultures will be easily knocked down!
When you volunteer in Maldives you will have plenty of time to enjoy real island life away from the 5 star luxuries Maldives is famous for. On the weekends you will have time to snorkel, scuba dive, try surfing and wake boarding, have private island picnics, go fishing, and relax on the pristine beaches.
MALDIVES, SIMPLY BREATHTAKING
“Maldives will simply take your breath away. If there is any place that can be called paradise, its definitely Maldives. Water is crystal clear, most islands are surrounded and protected by beautiful corals and marine life, and life of islanders is just simple and pure. Our unique volunteer opportunities will take you beyond the 5 star resorts to remote islands where you will experience authentic local island life while supporting local community development projects”
