Our International Development & Human Rights Intern program in Cambodia is a very important part of the work we do abroad to help poor, disadvantaged communities. We invite students, career breakers and compassionate human rights workers to join us in our mission. Sign up for our internship and make a difference to the local people of Cambodia, whilst adding a competitive edge to your resume and gaining invaluable work experience to enhance your career. Along the way, you’ll meet some incredible people, make friends for life through community living, and you’ll get the chance to travel around in this amazing part of South East Asia. It’s more than just a volunteering project – it’s a life changing and immersive experience. One that you will treasure and look back on forever. We provide a fun, exciting and meaningful internship program and we make it our goal to bring people together for a better, safer world.
And where better to take our program than Cambodia? Following on from the brutal Khmer Rouge regime and the Vietnam War, the country is still in a fragile place of healing and recovery. And whilst Cambodia is improving, there are still many issues to contend with; including a weak democracy, corruption, and the ongoing problems of poverty for many families. As Cambodia develops and the economy grows, it’s important for people like us and caring volunteers like you to come together to tackle these issues with an open mind and open heart. As an intern, you will learn the ins and outs of international development and human rights work, particularly for women and children who have been mistreated, abused and physically violated. You will work closely with NGOs, and you will be helping organizations provide much needed support, education and rehabilitation.

What is involved

This program is suitable for anyone who works in or is studying in a related field, such as global or social development. Or for those who are interested in taking a career break, making a career change to help others, or students taking a year out to travel and volunteer abroad. If you’re passionate about human rights and you want to touch the lives of others whilst finding meaning in your own life, our International Development & Human Rights Intern volunteering program is a great step for your next travel adventure.

During your time with us, you will have the opportunity to assist, support and shadow human rights workers or field workers within local NGOs. Projects you can get involved in include offering vocational training for women, working with children from slums and orphanages, helping refugee or trafficked women at rehabilitation centres, and assisting with psychological therapy for women in need. Some of the women or children you will come across will have sadly suffered severed mistreatment, and are often highly traumatised. Sympathy, patience and understanding are extremely important traits to be able to work in such a sensitive environment. An intermediate level of English will be required and due to the ever-changing needs of the organisations you will be working with, we do ask all of our interns to be open minded and flexible in participating in different tasks.

For the duration of the program, you will be working in the capital, Phnom Penh. This is a busy city with a great mix of local life, immersive experiences, sightseeing and plenty of important history to be devoured by the curious traveller. Above all else, what will really stand out to you is the kind, gentle people of the country. And we will do everything we can to help you make friends for life through our shared housing for the time that you’re with Volunteering Journeys and our partners in Cambodia.
