Monastery Volunteer In Nepal

Our Monastery volunteer program in Nepal involves teaching monks in Nepal. You will teach a group of young monk students from various background English, sports and computer skills. The monks living in the monastery belong to the families whose faith is Buddhism. Often the children are from the poor families from the mountainous regions of Nepal. The monastery provides the young monks with accommodation, meals and education. Additionally, being in the monastery young monks also learn and study Buddhism and perform various rituals.

A lot of monks are keen to learn English as part of their education but many monastery lack the funding required for skilled English Teachers. These monk children are only provided limited time a day of English teaching from government teachers, most of which are not well equipped in teaching the subject, and thus very little development takes place. Hence, there is a great need for skilled English-speaking volunteers to teach them the basics of the language and provide them with much-needed confidence that comes with a better understanding of the outside world. This project is about as close as it comes to two different worlds coming together, and you can expect to learn a few things yourself from these fascinating people during the course of the program.

What is involved

Although monks spend most of their day in ceremonial practice and worship, you will have the chance to offer your own program of teaching activities during their two hours break around noon, depending on the need the time can be extended up to 6 hours a day. Generally the monks are aged between 5 years to 18 years. However, sometimes the older monks above in their 20’s take part in the classes as well. The monks highly appreciate this worldly change in their schedule and are excited to learn from and about you! We invite you to create playful, creative and fun teaching activities, both giving the students an opportunity to learn from you as well as giving you a close-up look into the daily life at the monastery.

here are very few teaching resources for teaching (generally basic class rooms with a blackboard) so please be mindful of that. Classes will involve basic speaking, reading and writing English as well as some basic grammar sessions. We ideally prefer students who have completed a TEFL to be able to work in such an environment, however anyone who is keen to be a teacher or with good English skills should also apply.

PROGRAM LOCATION

Most of our Nepal programs are based around Kathmandu or Kathmandu valley

Nepal has captured the imagination of travelers for centuries, with its impossibly large mountains, serene monasteries, and beautiful cultural heritage. It is an increasingly popular destination for backpackers, adventurers, and other wanderers, who come hoping to absorb some of the spirituality the country is known for. With one-third of the population who live under the poverty line, it is one of the least developed nations in Asia. Nepal allows travelers to give back to the country, taking their trip beyond personal spiritual enrichment and into practical, useful, and productive support.

You could be staying in a home-stay in Kathmandu, Nuwakot, Bhaktapur or Lalitpur or at our volunteer house based in Kathmandu. Living is basic but comfortable and you will have access to electricity and western style toilets. Wifi is not always very strong but you can always get 4G data on your mobiles and stay connected. There are fans provided, however, it is important to be aware that there is no air-conditioning at the accommodation.

Breakfast at the accommodation is usually eggs and bread, butter, jam, fruit and tea or coffee. Dinner is usually a traditional Nepali meal with daal, curry and rice or other locally available dishes. Depending on your project site you can grab lunch near your projects. If you are at home during lunch time food will be provided.

What your first week looks like

Arrival day

Your arrival weekend will be relaxed. We will pick you up from the airport and bring you to your accommodation. Depending on your time of arrival, our team will meet you and give you a local orientation so you can get to know the area you are living in. The next day you will be given health and safety briefing and project training before we take you in for your program.

Weekdays

Your project coordinator or a member of the team will be taking you to the project and after introductions you can get started. Two meals breakfast, and dinner will be the accommodation and lunch is generally at the project site or outside. In the evenings most volunteers spend it either exploring local sights, relaxing at the accommodation or preparing for projects.

Weekend

Our local team will suggest many activities for you to do! Your weekends will be free for you to explore Nepal. We highly recommend you to utilise your time so you can get to see more of the country that you are visiting. We usually make recommendations based on past volunteer experiences. Its always better to book excursions in country with other volunteers.

Living in a remote part of Nepal and assisting with structural design work with local engineers and the community was an experience of a lifetime for these two students. Not only could they add this experience to their resume but they also got to learn from the challenges of working with limited resources.
Dog Care Program

Jack Tysowski from Canada joined us in August 2018 assisting at a dog shelter in Galle, Sri Lanka.

As a gap year student Jack would go everyday for about 4 hours to help the shelter that was devoted to the well-being of stray dogs in southern Sri Lanka. If your passionate about dogs and love to care for them this is the program for you!

They got to work in several departments of the hospital where they could practice basic procedures under the supervision of expert medical and nursing teams.
