Sri Lanka’s free tourist ETA scheme: what volunteers need to check before travelling
Since 25 May 2026, British passport holders have been among nationals of 40 countries eligible for a 30-day Sri Lankan tourist Electronic Travel Authorisation free of charge. The fee waiver does not remove the ETA requirement for ordinary tourism. British travellers should normally apply online before travelling.
The important distinction for volunteers is that a tourist ETA covers activities such as holidays, visiting friends and relatives, medical treatment and certain sporting or cultural activities. Voluntary work and activities carried out for an NGO may require prior immigration approval and a different visa process.
What the free tourist ETA provides
The official Department of Immigration and Emigration confirms that the UK is included in the fee-free scheme.
A tourist ETA allows a stay of up to 30 days and provides double-entry permission within that original 30-day period. Leaving Sri Lanka does not restart the clock. If you leave on day 22 and return on day 25, only the balance of the original 30 days remains.
Fees paid before 25 May 2026 are non-refundable. The ETA itself can be used to enter Sri Lanka within three months of issue.

Although Sri Lanka has a limited ETA-on-arrival facility, official UK guidance recommends applying before travelling. Relying on an airport application creates unnecessary risk because approval is not guaranteed.
The volunteering visa question
The Sri Lankan High Commission in the UK publishes a specific process for volunteers and personnel attached to NGOs. The organisation operating in Sri Lanka must apply to the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration for approval before the High Commission can issue the relevant entry visa. A similar prior-approval process applies to elective studies and voluntary work.
Do not assume that an unpaid placement automatically qualifies as tourism. Ask your programme provider which immigration category applies to your specific project and obtain the answer before booking non-refundable travel. Staying longer than 30 days
A tourist ETA initially covers 30 days, but eligible short-visit visas can be extended. Current UK travel guidance says extensions can be requested through Sri Lanka’s official online immigration portal, so travelling to Colombo solely to submit an extension is no longer always necessary.
