Teaching Volunteer in Sri Lanka

Be part of a meaningful change by joining our Teaching Volunteer Program in Sri Lanka, where dedicated volunteers help strengthen education and empower young learners. Sri Lanka’s education system faces ongoing challenges such as limited funding, outdated curricula, poor teacher training, and administrative inefficiencies — all of which impact the quality of learning for children, especially in rural and underprivileged areas.

One of the greatest obstacles is the lack of English proficiency among students from low-income families. As Sri Lanka continues to grow as a leading destination for tourism and global business, English has become an essential skill for future opportunities. By joining our Teach English in Sri Lanka Program, you’ll play an important role in helping students gain language confidence and open doors to a brighter future.

Volunteers work in local primary schools and kindergartens, assisting teachers with English lessons, classroom activities, and creative learning sessions. You’ll help children improve their communication skills through games, songs, storytelling, and conversation practice. This is not just about teaching English — it’s about building confidence, inspiring curiosity, and encouraging students to believe in their potential.

No prior teaching experience is required. This program is ideal for gap year students, families, or anyone passionate about working with children. Our local team provides guidance and support, helping you adapt to the classroom environment while ensuring your efforts truly make a difference.

By volunteering to teach in Sri Lanka, you’ll be part of a larger mission to improve education equity, bridge cultural gaps, and create lifelong memories in one of Asia’s most beautiful and welcoming countries.

What You’ll Do — Classroom Support, Lesson Planning & Community Engagement

As a teaching volunteer in Sri Lanka, your day-to-day work involves assisting local teachers in primary and secondary schools, as well as community projects. You may support classes in basic English, numeracy, grammar, conversation, creative learning, and reading activities. Schools and community centers often require volunteers to develop interactive lesson plans, use crafts or games, or lead small group sessions.

Volunteers typically work Monday through Friday, split between morning and afternoon sessions, with student age groups ranging from 4 to 16 years old. While local teaching materials and English curricula are provided, volunteers are encouraged to bring creativity in delivery — using games, storytelling, songs, and activities that make learning fun. Local mentors and teachers guide you throughout, ensuring you adapt to classroom culture and expectations.

Although the focus is on academic support, an equally important part of your role is building relationships with students, offering encouragement, mentorship, and personal attention. Evening free time is yours to relax, explore local sites, or prepare lessons. Over weekends, you can travel around Sri Lanka — visiting beaches, colonial towns, heritage sites like Galle Fort, or taking scenic train rides through tea country.

This program does not require prior teaching qualifications — all you need is enthusiasm, basic English confidence, and a heart for supporting education.

🕕 7:00 AM – 8:00 AM: Breakfast & Morning Prep
Start your day with a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast at the volunteer house — perhaps string hoppers, coconut sambal, or toast with tropical fruit. After breakfast, you’ll get ready for your placement and review your lesson plans or activities with other volunteers.

🛺 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM: Morning Teaching Sessions
Travel to your assigned school or kindergarten in a tuk-tuk, soaking in the coastal scenery along the way. Morning sessions focus on English language skills, conversation practice, creative lessons, and games to make learning fun and interactive. You’ll work alongside local teachers, assisting small groups or leading short activities.

🍛 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM: Lunch & Relaxation
Return to the volunteer house for a home-cooked Sri Lankan lunch and take some time to rest, socialize with fellow volunteers, or head to a nearby café for a quick chai break.

📚 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM: Afternoon Project Work or Lesson Planning
Afternoons may include lesson preparation, one-on-one tutoring, or visits to community centers for after-school clubs or English conversation practice. Some days, you might participate in workshops, creative sessions, or cultural exchange activities.

🌅 4:30 PM – 6:30 PM: Free Time & Local Exploration
After your placement, enjoy free time to explore Galle’s beaches, visit the UNESCO-listed Dutch Fort, or relax with a yoga class. Many volunteers use this time to experience local life — trying street food, shopping for souvenirs, or watching the sunset at the ramparts.

🍽️ 7:00 PM Onwards: Dinner & Relaxation
Evenings are relaxed with a shared dinner at the volunteer house. It’s a great time to share stories from your day, play games, or plan your weekend adventures around Sri Lanka — from tea plantations in the hills to safaris and beach getaways.
