Physiotherapy Internship In Sri Lanka

Our Physiotherapy Internship in Sri Lanka is designed to give students and professionals valuable hands-on experience in their specialist field while exploring one of the most beautiful and culturally rich countries in the world. Physiotherapy plays a vital role in healthcare — helping patients restore movement, strength, and independence after injury, illness, or disability, while also preventing future health complications.

During your placement, you’ll shadow and assist local physiotherapists in hospitals and clinics, gaining exposure to a wide range of cases and rehabilitation techniques. This experience not only enhances your clinical skills and global healthcare understanding but also adds an edge to your CV, preparing you for a successful career in physiotherapy or allied health sciences.

Volunteering or interning in a developing healthcare environment like Sri Lanka allows you to see how medical teams operate with limited resources, fostering adaptability, empathy, and problem-solving skills. Many of our participants describe this as a life-changing experience — one that deepens their compassion, broadens their perspective, and gives their travels a deeper purpose.

By joining this Physiotherapy Internship Abroad in Sri Lanka, you’ll gain far more than professional experience — you’ll return home inspired, skilled, and connected to a global community of healthcare changemakers.

What is involved

Your Physiotherapy Internship in Sri Lanka takes place in the beautiful southern province of Galle, a tropical paradise known for its palm-lined beaches, colonial architecture, and warm hospitality. This coastal city perfectly blends professional learning with a relaxed island lifestyle, making it one of the most rewarding destinations for medical and rehabilitation placements abroad.

During your internship, you’ll be placed at a local rehabilitation centre, working with patients suffering from both acute and chronic disabilities resulting from surgery, trauma, stroke, or tumours. Under the supervision of experienced physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and social care workers, you’ll gain hands-on experience in physical rehabilitation and assist with a variety of treatment techniques designed to restore movement, strength, and independence.

In addition to your clinic placement, you’ll also have the opportunity to join community outreach programs, accompanying doctors and therapists on home visits to assist individuals who cannot access the rehabilitation centre. This gives you invaluable insight into how healthcare functions in rural settings — and the profound impact physiotherapy can have in improving quality of life.

Our local team will provide full support and guidance throughout your internship, ensuring your placement is educational, meaningful, and culturally enriching.

Outside of work, you’ll experience the best of Sri Lanka’s southern coast. Spend your weekends surfing at Unawatuna, visiting the historic Galle Fort, exploring tea plantations in Ella, or embarking on a wildlife safari in Yala National Park.

Living and working in Sri Lanka is more than just an internship — it’s a chance to learn, grow, and immerse yourself in a country celebrated for its kindness, diversity, and breathtaking beauty.

Volunteering Journeys Sri Lanka programs are based in Southern Sri Lanka. We are based in Galle, which is one of Sri Lanka’s most enchanting destinations, home to the famous 17th century Dutch Fort which houses many beautiful pieces of colonial architecture behind its walls, as well as an absorbing collection of quirky shops and restaurants. Galle is an expansive area, encompassing not only the famed Fort, but it is also in close proximity to some world class beaches (that are great for surfing and swimming), including some gems such as the sleepy and relaxed Tangallebeach, the lively Mirissa beach, the turtle lagoons of Wijeya beach and the surfing havens of Ahangama and Weligama, as well as stunning rural inland villages surrounded by rice paddy fields and cinnamon plantations.
