Family Volunteering In Sri Lanka
Our Family Volunteering Program in Sri Lanka is all about escaping the ordinary and discovering this incredible island nation as participants — not just tourists. Designed for parents and children who want to make a difference while exploring, this program allows families to give back to local communities, support conservation projects, and experience the true warmth of Sri Lankan hospitality.
Volunteering as a family offers a meaningful way to ‘give something back’, share your skills, and introduce your children to new cultures and ways of life. It’s an inspiring opportunity to step away from the digital world and connect deeply — with one another, with local people, and with nature. Many families describe the joy of spending a day observing wild elephants or helping children learn English as unforgettable and life-changing experiences.
Our Family Volunteering in Sri Lanka program offers two enriching project types — community development through education and wildlife conservation. Families can choose between :
Community Projects in Galle: Based along Sri Lanka’s beautiful South West Coast, this program allows you to work in local schools and community centers, helping with English teaching or disabled care programs. You’ll live in comfortable, family-friendly accommodation near the beach, with flexible start dates to suit your travel plans.
Wildlife Conservation in Wasgamuwa, Central Sri Lanka: A truly unique adventure where families join conservationists in the field to observe and protect wild Asian elephants. You’ll help track elephant movements, collect data, and support local community education to promote coexistence.
Sri Lanka is one of the most family-friendly destinations in Asia. Its rich culture, scenic beauty, and love for family make every visitor feel welcome. When you’re not volunteering, you can explore Yala National Park for an unforgettable safari, visit the lush tea plantations of Kandy or Nuwara Eliya, or relax on golden beaches in Mirissa or Weligama. We highly recommend spending extra days exploring — your family adventure in Sri Lanka will be nothing short of extraordinary.
Our family program welcomes families of all sizes and children of different ages. Activities are designed to be flexible and engaging for both adults and children, from helping in classrooms to walking quietly on elephant trails. It’s a unique way to bond, learn, and grow together while making a meaningful contribution.
Family Holiday Volunteering in Sri Lanka
Why Choose Family Volunteering in Sri Lanka
Volunteering with your family lets you break from routine and connect meaningfully with local communities. It’s not about sightseeing—it’s about being active participants and making a purposeful difference. Families often treasure the shared sense of achievement from helping children learn or walking quietly in the forest tracking elephants.
Teaching & Community Work
You’ll collaborate with local schools and joyfully assist children (ages 3–12) in English lessons, arts, games, and interactive learning. You’ll plan lessons, deliver engaging activities, and support local teachers in their daily work.
Elephant Conservation
In Wasgamuwa, you’ll join conservationists in field research—observing elephants in their natural habitat, documenting human-elephant conflict, and helping raise awareness in nearby villages. You’ll also assist in community programs and school education about coexistence and environmental stewardship.
You can choose to focus on one or combine both projects depending on your family’s interest and length of stay.

Galle is an expansive area, encompassing not only the famed Fort, but it is also in close proximity to some world class beaches (that are great for surfing and swimming), including some gems such as the sleepy and relaxed Tangallebeach, the lively Mirissa beach, the turtle lagoons of Wijeya beach and the surfing havens of Ahangama and Weligama, as well as stunning rural inland villages surrounded by rice paddy fields and cinnamon plantations.
Our Elephant Conservation Program is based in Wasgamuwa National Park
Wasgamuwa is one of protected areas where Sri Lankan Elephants can be seen in large herds. It is also one of the Important Bird Areas in Sri Lanka. The name of the Wasgamuwa has derived through the words “Walas Gamuwa”. “Walasa” is Sinhala for sloth bear and “Gamuwa” means a wood.
