Dog Care Volunteer In Sri Lanka

The life of a stray dog in Sri Lanka is incredibly difficult. With over 40 million stray dogs nationwide, countless animals suffer from hunger, untreated disease, and neglect. Public awareness of animal welfare remains limited, and many dogs face abuse or abandonment. Female strays often give birth to multiple litters each year, with puppies frequently left outside temples or on the streets — most too weak to survive without intervention.

Our Dog Care Volunteer Program in Sri Lanka plays a vital role in changing this reality. Volunteers help support a local shelter that is home to nearly 200 rescued dogs, providing daily care, love, and essential medical attention. The funds from volunteer fees directly contribute to the shelter’s operations — covering the cost of food, staff salaries, vaccinations, medicine, and veterinary equipment.

This program is ideal for animal lovers and veterinary students looking for a hands-on experience in animal care and welfare. You’ll assist the local team with a range of activities, from feeding and cleaning to helping with basic medical treatments, socializing the dogs, and supporting community outreach programs.

The shelter’s mission is not only to care for rescued animals but also to create a more compassionate society through education and ethical animal management. Key objectives include:

  • Implementing neutering programs to reduce the stray dog population humanely

  • Conducting mass vaccination drives to prevent disease and control rabies

  • Providing treatment and care for injured and sick dogs

  • Promoting understanding and coexistence between dogs and humans

  • Supporting social adoption initiatives for families in Sri Lanka

Many dog owners in Sri Lanka cannot afford veterinary services, which makes the shelter’s free treatment programs critical for both animal and community well-being.

By joining our Dog Care Volunteering in Sri Lanka, you’ll make a direct impact — improving the lives of vulnerable animals while learning about grassroots animal welfare in a developing country. It’s an emotional, educational, and deeply fulfilling experience that truly saves lives.a

What You’ll Do — Hands-On Animal Welfare Tasks

This dog care program supports a shelter housing nearly 200 dogs, providing vital funding for staff, food, medical supplies, and operations. The clinic also delivers free treatments, vaccinations, and neutering services — essential in regions where many dog owners can’t afford vet care.

Your involvement helps reduce stray dog populations humanely, improve community attitudes toward animals, and save lives. Veterinarians and animal lovers alike find this program deeply rewarding, both in what you learn and the care you give.

You’ll be based in Talpe, in Southern Sri Lanka, near the coastal region and close to Galle’s vibrant beaches and culture.

Volunteers typically commit to 4 hours per day, and a minimum stay of 4 weeks is recommended for meaningful impact. Weekends are free — perfect for exploring Sri Lanka’s natural beauty, beaches, or cultural sites.

Volunteers typically work morning or afternoon shifts from Monday to Friday, assisting the local team with a wide range of animal care and shelter maintenance tasks. While the daily schedule may vary depending on the needs of the clinic, our dedicated local experts will be there to guide and support you throughout your placement. Flexibility and a positive attitude are key — every day brings something new and rewarding!

Your daily tasks may include:

  • Feeding and socializing with the dogs to improve their trust and well-being

  • Caring for sick or injured animals, offering comfort and companionship during recovery

  • Grooming activities such as brushing, nail trimming, and ear cleaning

  • Health checks like tick inspection and administering medicine under supervision

  • Shelter maintenance, including cleaning kennels and dog boxes when needed

  • Supporting the team with daily operations and hygiene upkeep to ensure a clean, safe environment for the animals

If you’re a veterinary student or trainee, your role may be more specialized depending on your experience and level of study. Veterinary students often assist in the “New Clinic”, where sick and injured stray or owned dogs are brought for treatment. Typical responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting the local veterinarian during examinations, wound care, injections, and post-operative treatment

  • Handling and calming animals during medical procedures

  • Helping with feeding, washing, and monitoring recovering dogs

  • For advanced students, opportunities may include assisting with castrations, suturing, and other minor procedures under professional supervision

This program offers an incredible opportunity to gain hands-on animal welfare and veterinary experience, while directly improving the lives of Sri Lanka’s vulnerable dogs. Whether you’re an animal lover or a vet student, every contribution you make brings hope, healing, and happiness to these deserving animals.
