Teach English to Buddhist Monks in Sri Lanka

A Pirivena, or Buddhist monastic school in Sri Lanka, serves as both an educational and spiritual center for monks and sometimes local community members. Young monks live and study here under the guidance of senior monks, learning not only the teachings of the Buddha but also classical subjects such as Pali, Sanskrit, history, logic, astrology, and prosody. The Pirivena education system places great emphasis on recitation, memorization, discussion, and deep analysis of sacred texts — preserving a centuries-old tradition of monastic learning.

At the same time, Pirivenas are where novice monks are trained in the Vinaya Pitaka, the monastic code of discipline that forms one of the three main sections of the Tripitaka, the Buddhist scriptures. These schools form the intellectual and moral foundation of Buddhist life in Sri Lanka.

Our Buddhist Monk Teaching Volunteer Program in Sri Lanka allows you to become part of this rich spiritual setting. You will be placed at a local Pirivena, where you’ll teach English to young monks who are eager to expand their language skills. Despite their dedication to learning, most Pirivenas lack qualified English teachers and resources, as government schools typically provide only 40 minutes of English instruction per day — often taught by undertrained teachers.

As a volunteer English teacher, you will help bridge this gap by introducing the monks to conversational English, pronunciation, and grammar in an engaging and supportive way. Beyond academics, your presence helps them build confidence, curiosity, and global awareness, empowering them to connect with the wider world.

This is a truly transformative cultural exchange — a chance for two worlds to come together. While you teach English, you’ll also learn from the monks’ calm wisdom, discipline, and philosophy — gaining insights into Buddhist traditions and Sri Lanka’s deep spiritual heritage.

What You’ll Do — English Classes & Lesson Planning

As a volunteer English teacher in a Buddhist Pirivena (monastic school), you will help young monks aged 11 to 19 build confidence in speaking, reading, and writing English. Classes are small to medium-sized, typically with 2 to 15 students, and are conducted outside their formal school hours, usually between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. (the exact timetable will be confirmed on arrival). Each lesson lasts approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, allowing you to develop meaningful connections with your students.

Volunteers are responsible for lesson planning and classroom delivery, using creative and interactive teaching methods suited to limited-resource environments. While our local team will provide guidance, materials, and suggestions for lesson topics, the preparation and execution of classes will be your responsibility. Classrooms are basic — usually equipped with just a blackboard — so we encourage volunteers to bring simple teaching aids or activities to make lessons engaging and fun.

You’ll focus on building foundational English skills, including pronunciation, sentence construction, reading comprehension, and everyday conversation. We ideally prefer volunteers who have completed a TEFL or TESOL certification, but this is not mandatory — anyone with strong English communication skills, patience, and enthusiasm for teaching is welcome to apply.

Beyond the classroom, living and working in Sri Lanka offers an unforgettable cultural experience. You’ll stay in a tropical paradise surrounded by lush landscapes, vibrant communities, and warm hospitality. During your free time and weekends, you can go surfing along the southern coast, visit the tea plantations of Ella, or experience a wildlife safari at Yala National Park.

Teaching English to monks in Sri Lanka is more than just a volunteer role — it’s a profound cultural exchange where you’ll share knowledge, gain insight into Buddhist philosophy, and leave with a deeper understanding of compassion, patience, and peace.

Volunteer in Sri Lanka Program Location

This program is based in Galle, Southern Sri Lanka

Volunteering Journeys Sri Lanka programs are based in Southern Sri Lanka. We are based in Galle, which is one of Sri Lanka’s most enchanting destinations, home to the famous 17th century Dutch Fort which houses many beautiful pieces of colonial architecture behind its walls, as well as an absorbing collection of quirky shops and restaurants. Galle is an expansive area, encompassing not only the famed Fort, but it is also in close proximity to some world class beaches (that are great for surfing and swimming), including some gems such as the sleepy and relaxed Tangallebeach, the lively Mirissa beach, the turtle lagoons of Wijeya beach and the surfing havens of Ahangama and Weligama, as well as stunning rural inland villages surrounded by rice paddy fields and cinnamon plantations.
