Volunteer in Sri Lanka — Wildlife, Teaching & Medical Projects Abroad

When you join one of our volunteer abroad programs in Sri Lanka, you’ll quickly be captivated by the island’s warm hospitality, stunning natural beauty, and fascinating history. Known for its British colonial heritage, tea plantations, pristine beaches, and world-famous national parks, Sri Lanka is an enchanting destination for those seeking meaningful travel. This small yet diverse nation offers an idyllic pace of life, where volunteers can explore at leisure while contributing to positive community change.

Sri Lanka is home to an incredible variety of wildlife — from elephants and leopards in the jungles to sea turtles, dolphins, and whales along its coastlines. Yet, as a developing nation recovering from decades of civil war, a deadly Tsunami and political unrest, many communities still face challenges in education, healthcare, and animal welfare. By joining one of our Sri Lanka volunteer programs, you can help address these needs directly.

Why Volunteer in Sri Lanka? Need, Heritage & Opportunity

After decades of civil war, Sri Lanka is recovering and growing rapidly—but many communities still face development challenges. In rural and wildlife-rich areas there’s a strong need for support in public healthcare, education, animal welfare, and conservation. Volunteering here provides more than just an experience—your involvement contributes to real change: helping with elephant conservation, rebuilding schools, assisting in hospitals, and caring for vulnerable communities.

Our main volunteer programs in Sri Lanka are centered around the historic coastal city of Galle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its colonial forts, lighthouses, and charming architecture. Here, volunteers can choose from a range of impactful projects, including:

  • Dog Shelter Volunteering – Care for neglected and injured street dogs, assist with feeding, grooming, rehabilitation, and raising awareness about animal welfare.
  • Teaching in Local Schools – Support under-resourced schools by teaching English, helping with classroom activities, and running after-school programs.
  • Monk English Teaching – Teach conversational English to Buddhist monks in local monasteries, giving them skills that broaden their opportunities.
  • Medical Internships in Sri Lanka – Work at one of the largest government hospitals in Southern Sri Lanka. These placements are best suited for advanced-level medical or nursing students looking for hands-on experience in public sector hospitals.

In addition, our elephant conservation programs near Wasgamuwa National Park are among our most popular opportunities. As a volunteer, you’ll participate in genuine conservation activities such as monitoring wild elephants, supporting conflict mitigation efforts between local farmers and elephants, and helping build safe sanctuaries. These programs are ideal for anyone passionate about wildlife conservation in Sri Lanka and making a real difference in protecting endangered species.

By joining our Sri Lanka volunteer programs abroad, you’ll experience both the cultural richness of Galle and the ecological importance of Sri Lanka’s wildlife habitats, all while contributing to sustainable change.
