Family Volunteering In South Africa

Our Family Volunteering Program in South Africa is based in the vibrant and culturally rich Western Cape, one of the most diverse regions in the country. This unique area showcases a blend of cultures and contrasts — from wealthy urban neighbourhoods to nearby underprivileged settlements — creating an inspiring environment for community-based volunteering. Families joining this program will have the chance to make a tangible impact on the lives of children and families in need while sharing unforgettable experiences together.

The Community You’ll Work With

The main communities we support are located in the Du Noon and Wolwerivier townships near Cape Town. Here, many families live in informal housing built from scrap metal and reclaimed wood, often without access to running water or stable electricity. Around 40% of households are headed by single mothers, and many children grow up without consistent guidance or educational support at home.

Most of the children you’ll be working with are Xhosa or Afrikaans speakers, although many also understand English. Despite facing daily challenges, these children are bright, curious, and full of energy — eager to learn, play, and connect with volunteers from around the world.

Why Choose This Program

This program is ideal for families who want to make a difference together while enjoying the beauty and warmth of South Africa. Whether you’re helping build a garden, playing soccer with local kids, or simply sharing stories and laughter, every moment contributes to hope and empowerment in these communities.

You’ll also get the chance to explore Cape Town’s stunning beaches, Table Mountain, and the region’s vibrant culture during your free time — creating the perfect blend of purpose and adventure.

Why Families Choose This Holiday

✅ Builds empathy, teamwork and global awareness for children and adults alike.
✅ Helps communities in meaningful ways — gardens to harvest food, children’s programmes to support youth development.
✅ Offers a genuine mix of service, skill-sharing and vacation fun (surfing, sports, beaches).
✅ Customisable to different ages, interests and energy levels — whether younger children, teens or multi-generational groups.
✅ Cape Town and surrounding regions offer breathtaking scenery, marine life and social diversity.

What is involved

The main goal of our family volunteering program is to support poverty prevention and community upliftment through education, sustainable development, and youth engagement. Families play an active role in several impactful areas, including:

  • Community Development Projects: Helping with subsistence farming and sustainable agriculture projects — from planting and maintaining vegetable gardens to teaching families how to grow food for their own use.

  • Educational Support: Assisting in after-school programs, teaching English and basic subjects, or helping children with homework and creative workshops.

  • Sports and Recreation: Organising sports activities, beach games, and motivational events to promote teamwork, health, and self-confidence.

  • Social Upliftment Initiatives: Participating in community events, environmental cleanups, and skill-building activities that bring joy and empowerment to children and families alike.

These activities provide families with the unique opportunity to volunteer together, combining meaningful service with learning, fun, and cultural exchange. Parents and children alike will gain valuable insight into life in South Africa while contributing to lasting positive change.

Here’s how your week might look:

  • Monday to Thursday: Volunteering sessions each morning and afternoon, working with children, community gardens, or sports programmes. Children and adults both participate in age-appropriate tasks and shared activities.

  • Evenings: Free time to enjoy family meals, explore local areas, and relax together.

  • Friday to Sunday: Weekends are for discovery & bonding — trips to local beaches, nature trails, fish markets, surfing lessons, or exploring Cape Town’s heritage and landscapes.

For example, families may spend Saturday morning volunteering in a community centre, and afternoon surfing with kids, followed by relaxing at the beach. Sunday might involve a coastal and nature outing together as a family.

Holiday club
During the school holidays, our projects run differently and according to our holiday club schedule. The activities are dependant upon the weather, length of holiday and number of attendees.

The aim of the holiday club program is for the kids to have fun and to keep them off the streets. The activities during this
time are less structured and more focused on the enjoyment of the children. Please note: If a holiday club activity requires the payment of an entrance fee, volunteers will have to pay for themselves.
The programme fee is used to cover the entrance for the children only, however, we do try to plan as many free events as possible.
