Women empowerment in India

Gender inequality remains one of the most pressing social issues in India, limiting women’s access to education, healthcare, employment, and equal social standing. In many disadvantaged communities, young girls are forced into early marriages, while domestic abuse and violence are often normalized due to lack of support systems. These barriers prevent women from building independent lives and achieving their potential.

Our Women’s Empowerment Volunteer Program in Kerala, India focuses on skill-building, education, and confidence development. By working with local women, you’ll help them gain practical skills and self-belief, giving them the ability to pursue jobs, earn higher incomes, and create secure futures for themselves and their families.

By joining this program, you’ll contribute directly to advancing gender equality in India, supporting women to break cycles of dependence and redefine their futures with dignity and independence.

What is involved

Our Women’s Empowerment Program in India is based in Kochi (Cochin), Kerala, a coastal city recently ranked among the Top 10 Cities to Visit by Lonely Planet. This initiative focuses on skill development as a pathway to empowerment, giving local women the tools and confidence they need to improve their lives.

As a volunteer, you’ll work with small group of women (3 to 20) eager to learn English and computer skills. English lessons help them support their children’s education, communicate beyond their community, and increase self-confidence, while digital literacy open doors to better-paying jobs. Most of them would have intermediate or basic level English.

Daily sessions run for about 3–4 hours, guided by our Women’s Empowerment Coordinator, who provides resources and support. As a volunteer, you may lead or support sessions in:

  • English language teaching, especially conversational and practical usage
  • Vocational training skills such as computer basics, embroidery, tailoring or crochet.
  • Life skills & confidence workshops, including communication, financial literacy, goal-setting
  • Mentoring & women’s circles, where participants share stories, set goals, and support each other

Our coordinator provides a broad framework, but you’ll have flexibility to design sessions relevant to women’s real needs and your skills.

You don’t need prior teaching experience—just fluency in English and enthusiasm to support. Volunteers with backgrounds in computer skill training, education, curriculum design, or vocational training are especially valuable.

Beyond teaching, this program is also about cultural exchange and community connection. You’ll form deep relationships with local women, share experiences across cultures, and contribute to long-term empowerment.

By joining, you’ll not only support women in building brighter futures but also be part of a global movement for equality and empowerment.
