Teach English in India — Volunteer Teaching Program in Kerala

Join our Teaching English Volunteer Program in India, based in Fort Kochi, Kerala, and support underprivileged children in government schools by helping them build confidence, language skills, and academic success.

Kerala is often celebrated for its high literacy rates, but those statistics typically reflect reading and writing in the local language (Malayalam). In many government schools, students have limited exposure to English. This gap makes English teaching volunteers in India especially valuable. By introducing interactive methods instead of rote learning, you help students think, speak, and dream beyond conventional limitations.

Why Teaching English in Kerala is Needed

Government schools in Kerala often operate with limited budgets, minimal teaching staff, and poor infrastructure. The dominant teaching method is rote learning, which leads to shallow understanding, low confidence, and limited development of social and communication skills. This situation creates long-term barriers:

  • High dropout rates after high school.
  • Children from underprivileged families leaving school early to take up low-paying jobs.
  • Poor English proficiency preventing youth from accessing well-paid office roles, tourism jobs, or international opportunities.

By volunteering to teach English in India, you help break this cycle, empowering children with the skills they need for higher education and future employment.

What the Teaching Program Involves

Our volunteer teaching programs in Kochi, Kerala are designed to support under-resourced schools while giving you a chance to immerse yourself in local culture. Volunteers are not only teachers but also mentors and role models who create a ripple effect of positive change.
By combining classroom support with cultural exchange, you’ll make a real impact — helping children build strong English foundations, essential life skills, and a brighter future.

Our teaching volunteers in India support local schools by:

  • Assisting teachers with English lessons for children aged 6–16.
  • Introducing interactive and alternative learning methods beyond rote memorization.
  • Encouraging reading, conversation, storytelling, and creative activities to build confidence.
  • Supporting other subjects (Math, Science) if comfortable.
  • Running after-school programs or summer camps to provide extra learning opportunities.

Volunteers also contribute to school development projects, including creating libraries, setting up e-learning resources, and introducing computers and iPads into classrooms.

Because many children come from families where parents have little or no education, they receive almost no academic reinforcement at home. For many, reading storybooks or practicing English conversations is a luxury they would never experience without volunteer support.

By teaching English in India, you:

  • Provide children with skills and confidence that last a lifetime.
  • Help reduce dropout rates by making education enjoyable rather than intimidating.
  • Inspire students to pursue higher education and seek better-paying jobs in growing sectors like tourism, hospitality, and business.
