Special Needs & Disabled Care Volunteering in India

Our Special Needs and Disabled Care Program in South India focuses on working with children who have physical and developmental disabilities, ensuring they receive the support and opportunities they need. Disabilities can often prevent children from fully participating in school, play, family life, and community activities. In disadvantaged communities, these challenges are made worse by social stigma, negative attitudes, and a lack of resources.

Many families in poorer areas struggle to identify or understand their child’s disability due to limited education, awareness, and healthcare access. Even when diagnosed, they often lack the training or financial means to provide continuous care. As a result, children with disabilities can face neglect, and families are left under immense strain without proper guidance or support.

Our Special Needs Volunteering Program in India directly addresses these challenges. As a volunteer, you will assist in special schools and community centers, working with trained teachers to provide care, therapy, and learning support. You’ll help children through activities that build confidence, communication, and motor skills, while also supporting families with compassion and encouragement.

This program is suitable for anyone passionate about disabled care and special needs support abroad. No prior experience is required, as you will be guided by specialist teachers and caregivers. Students of social work, education, childcare, or healthcare as well as volunteers with experience in special needs or disabled care will find this program especially rewarding.

By joining, you’ll make a lasting impact on children’s development while contributing to greater acceptance and inclusion of people with disabilities in Indian society.

What Volunteers will do

Based in Kerala, South India, this program is with a special needs school, where you’ll assist local teachers in supporting disabled children aged 2 to 18 years. Children here have varying degreeing of mental and physical problems.

Your activities may include:

  • Assisting teachers with sessions in multi-sensory rooms (sound, touch, visual stimuli)

  • Conducting or helping with learning support activities for children identified in mainstream schools

  • Running games, fine motor skill exercises, basic life skills, and social interaction tasks

  • Supporting family outreach visits and counseling to help caregivers understand and handle diagnoses

  • Collaborating with local staff to adapt or innovate teaching / therapy materials to suit needs

You’ll always work under supervision, sometimes one-on-one, with local specialists guiding you in safe and ethical methods.

In addition to working in the special needs school, volunteers may also support disabled adults who are in vocational units and assist with tailoring, computer skills, paper bag making, candle making or carpentry.

This Special Needs Care Volunteering Program in India offers plenty of flexibility to shape your placement to your interests and skills. It is an excellent opportunity for students and volunteers interested in special education, childcare, mental health, occupational therapy, physiotherapy as well as anyone with a passion for working with children with disability.

Not only will this program provide you with valuable international work experience, but it also allows you to make a meaningful contribution to a community where disabled care and special needs support are often under-resourced. By joining, you’ll play an important role in creating opportunities for children with disabilities while gaining cultural immersion and personal growth.
