Medical Electives In Peru

Embark on a rewarding medical elective abroad in Peru, designed for medical and nursing students seeking meaningful clinical experience in a developing healthcare environment. This program offers an invaluable opportunity to expand your practical knowledge, observe medical practices in real-world settings, and immerse yourself in the rich culture of South America.

Peru provides a unique backdrop for your elective — its healthcare system faces challenges very different from those in more developed countries, giving you insight into global health disparities, tropical diseases, and local approaches to treatment and patient care.

Based in Cusco, a vibrant city in the Peruvian Andes, you’ll work alongside local doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals in busy community clinics and hospitals, gaining exposure to real cases while being guided by experienced mentors.

Your medical elective can include rotations or exposure in general medicine, midwifery, physiotherapy, or as a doctor’s assistant in local clinics. All placements are supervised, ensuring you gain professional insight in a safe and structured environment.

This program also offers the chance to live and learn in one of the most culturally rich destinations in the world. When you’re not at the clinic, you can explore Cusco’s cobbled streets, visit the breathtaking Sacred Valley, or trek to the world-famous Machu Picchu.

What You’ll Gain

  • Hands-on learning through supervised medical work in local clinics.

  • Exposure to tropical and endemic diseases not often seen in developed countries.

  • Cultural immersion through close interaction with Peruvian healthcare teams and communities.

  • A stronger medical portfolio that enhances your studies and career prospects.

  • An unforgettable adventure, blending clinical learning with travel and exploration.

This medical elective program in Peru is best suited for medical, nursing, or healthcare students with at least basic Spanish skills. If you are not fluent, we can arrange Spanish lessons before or during your placement to help you communicate confidently with patients and staff. Alternatively we can give you a placement with private health clinics where patients speak English.

The minimum duration for this program is 4 weeks, ensuring you have enough time to gain meaningful experience and adjust to local practices.

What You'll do as a Medical Electives student

During your medical elective in Peru, you’ll be based in Cusco, working in busy public health clinics that serve local and rural communities. Under the guidance of qualified Peruvian doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals, you’ll gain real-world experience in clinical observation and patient care — all while receiving full support from our local team.

The placement offers you the chance to experience how healthcare functions in a developing country and to contribute meaningfully to improving the wellbeing of the local community.

🩺 Learning & Practical Experience by Level of Study

Your placement responsibilities will vary depending on your experience and year of study.

First- and Second-Year Medical or Nursing Students

Students in their early years of study can assist in general healthcare support tasks, including:

  • Taking patient vitals (weight, height, blood pressure, heart rate, temperature)

  • Helping with basic patient care such as bed preparation and hygiene

  • Preparing and sterilizing medical materials and instruments

  • Observing consultations and assisting with vaccination programs

  • Providing companionship and communication support to patients

These foundational tasks give you a deeper understanding of the hospital workflow and the importance of patient interaction and teamwork in healthcare.

Third- and Fourth-Year Students

Students in advanced years will have broader exposure and can assist more directly under supervision in departments such as general medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, dentistry, psychology, and physiotherapy. Typical responsibilities may include:

  • Cleaning and dressing wounds

  • Assisting with injections, sutures, and blood sample collection

  • Supporting doctors in taking medical histories and conducting physical exams

  • Managing vaccination records and documentation

  • Observing or participating in specialized departments like midwifery or physiotherapy

All activities are conducted under close supervision to ensure safety and proper learning outcomes.

🏥 Work Environment and Schedule

Placements run Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM, allowing plenty of free time to explore Cusco’s rich culture and surrounding attractions in the afternoons and weekends.

You’ll primarily be working in public clinics, rotating across key departments such as:

  • General Medicine

  • Nursing

  • Laboratory

  • Odontology (Dental Care)

  • Psychology

  • Administration

  • Home Visits

  • Malnutrition Reduction Programs

These rotations provide a holistic perspective of Peru’s healthcare system and community health challenges.

If your level of Spanish is low we will have to place you in private clinics which are primarily for tourists and fairly busy also.

There are limited spots on our Peru medical electives placements so please apply in advance if you are considering this placement.

Healthcare standards and infrastructure in Peru differ significantly from those in Western countries. Many clinics still rely heavily on manual record-keeping, with limited access to advanced technology or equipment.
This provides an eye-opening opportunity to witness how healthcare professionals manage and prioritize treatment in low-resource environments — fostering creativity, adaptability, and compassion in your future medical career.

Your contribution as a volunteer is deeply valued. Extra help in clinics makes a real difference in reducing workloads and improving care for the local community.

This makes Cusco an ideal base for medical students seeking hands-on exposure to real-world health challenges in developing settings.

While working in local clinics and hospitals, you’ll have the chance to experience Peruvian life up close — from exploring bustling local markets and colourful festivals to engaging with warm, welcoming communities.
