🌿 About the Program

You can join our Family Sea Turtle Conservation Program for 2 or 4 weeks. Both options give you a chance to live close to nature, contribute to marine conservation, and explore Costa Rica’s most stunning peninsulas.

4-Week Program: Embark on a 4-week journey refining surf or yoga skills and engaging in local volunteering projects. and guided explorations the rich biodiversity, turtle patrol the extensive beach areas of Manzanillo in Cirenas project looking for turtle laying their eggs, also exploring the cloud forest in Monteverde and give your self a dose of adrenaline with the different activities this place has to offer.

2-Week Program: Focus on the Nicoya Peninsula, home to pristine beaches, tropical forests, waterfalls, and vibrant local communities. You will be doing Surf lessons, yoga sessions, local environmental and community volunteering

Both programs include yoga or surf sessions, and meaningful conservation work, offering families the perfect balance of learning, relaxation, and purpose.

Program Structure

Your journey begins with a pickup from San José Airport and transfer to your volunteer base.

🗓 4-Week Experience

  • Weeks 1– You will be starting your volunteering journey in Santa Teresa on the Nicoya Peninsula, a lively beach town known for its surf culture, yoga retreats, and tropical sunsets.

  • Week. 3-4  Learn about organic farming, regenerative practices, and environmental awareness while working on vital sea turtle conservation projects. You will also be hiking in Santa Elena, Monteverde
    (Guided hikes, reforestation, eco-adventure activities)

🗓 2-Week Experience

  • Spend your entire stay in Santa Teresa, Nicoya Peninsula, combining volunteering with relaxation, yoga, and optional surf lessons — perfect for families with limited time.

🐢 What You’ll Do

As part of this family volunteering adventure, you’ll join hands-on conservation and community projects designed to make a real difference. Depending on the season, your activities may include:

  • Beach Conservation: Participate in beach clean-ups, promote environmental awareness, and support the Blue Flag Initiative to protect Costa Rica’s pristine coastline.

  • Reforestation Projects: Help nurture young trees, maintain nurseries, and assist in replanting efforts to restore local ecosystems.

  • Recycling & Sustainability Work: Join our Bionics Recycling project to collect, sort, and repurpose plastic waste into sustainable materials.

  • Community Engagement: Assist with educational workshops, after-school programs, and fun English or sports sessions for local children.

  • Turtle Conservation (seasonal): Depending on your travel dates, visit a nearby turtle sanctuary and take part in nest protection, beach patrols, or hatchling releases.

Each activity is designed to be family-friendly, so parents and children can work together while learning about Costa Rica’s rich biodiversity and eco-conscious way of life.

Alongside volunteering, you’ll enjoy yoga or surfing, giving your family a holistic cultural and wellness experience.

🕒 A Typical Day in Costa Rica

Here’s what your day might look like at the Jakera Jungle Camp:

7:30 AM: Enjoy a delicious breakfast of tropical fruits, fresh juice, and Costa Rican coffee.
8:30 AM – 10:30 AM: Join Spanish lessons tailored to your level, helping you interact better with the local community.
11:00 AM – 1:30 PM: Volunteer as a family in environmental or community projects.
1:30 PM: Lunch at the camp — locally sourced, organic meals with vegetarian options.
Afternoon: Relax at the beach, explore Santa Teresa’s surf scene, or join an optional surf or yoga session.
Evening: Share stories with other families, take part in a cooking or dance class, or simply unwind under the stars.

We recommend arriving on a Saturday. Our optional arrival package ($180 per person) includes airport pickup, one night in a hotel near the airport, and transfer to Santa Teresa the next day.

Family Volunteering in Costa Rica Hospitality

You’ll stay at Jakera Jungle Camp, a tropical paradise surrounded by forest and only a 10-minute walk from the beach. Accommodation is in comfortable dorms (single, twin, or family rooms available on request) with shared bathroom facilities and a communal kitchen.

Meals include healthy, organic options — locally grown produce, fresh fish, and vegetarian dishes. Breakfast and lunch are provided on weekdays, with brunch on weekends. Families can also dine at nearby cafes and restaurants in Santa Teresa.

What your first week looks like

Arrival day

On arrival at the airport we will pick you up and transfer you to a hotel in San Jose. Depending on your time of arrival, the next day you will be transferred to the project location by public transport. Our team will meet you and give you a local orientation, health and safety briefing, and project training before we take you in for your program.

Weekdays

Your project coordinator or a member of the team will be taking you to the project and after introductions you can get started. Your two meals breakfast and lunch are included.  There will be activities through the day and everything we do will be guided and our local team will be there to advise you on what, where and how!

Weekend

During your free time in Costa Rica, we encourage volunteers to explore as much as possible.  Weekends are free to explore — try horseback riding, waterfall treks, or day trips to Monteverde Cloud Forest or national parks nearby.
