What You’ll Do – Learning & Supporting Maternal Care in Cambodia

Your midwifery internship placement will be at a public or private hospital, maternity clinic, or community health centre in Phnom Penh. You’ll work closely with the local maternity team, observing and supporting their work in prenatal, delivery, and postnatal care.

While this is primarily an observation-based internship, you’ll have the chance to engage actively in non-clinical and community-based learning as your confidence grows.

Typical learning opportunities include:

  • Observing antenatal check-ups, fetal monitoring, and patient counseling sessions.

  • Assisting staff in maternity and neonatal wards, learning about delivery preparation and postnatal care.

  • Understanding family planning, maternal nutrition, and health education in Cambodia’s cultural context.

  • Learning how to identify and manage common complications in pregnancy and childbirth under supervision.

Typical Daily Schedule

Your internship will generally run Monday to Friday, with weekends free for exploration and rest. A typical day looks like this:

  2. Visas are possible on arrival at the airport and you may also get E-Visas. Please check requirements with your airline or Cambodian Embassy in your country based on your nationality.
  3. Travel Insurance is compulsory on this program.

Accommodation, Meals and Set Up

Living Arrangement:

We carefully plan suitable living arrangements for our volunteers, not only to ensure that they are safe, comfortable and conveniently located, but also to give you an amazing travel experience. You will either be placed in shared housing with other volunteers who share the same lust for life and a passion for travel and living abroad, helping others and learning from each other.  This community living concept helps you effortlessly immerse yourself into local life whilst allowing you to explore the local area at your own comfortable place. All of our selected housing is situated close to amenities, shops or restaurants so you will never be too far from essentials. Across each location, we will also arrange for daily meals to be provided so you can experience traditional local cuisine.

Weekends:

In Phnom Penh, you will be surrounded by remains of Cambodia’s harrowing Khmer Rouge history and you will also have endless bars, restaurants and nightlife at your fingertips. If thats not enough you can head down to Siam Reap and visit the famous Angkor Was temples – a must do in Asia.

Arrival day

Your arrival weekend will be relaxed. We will pick you up from the airport and bring you to your accommodation. Depending on your time of arrival, our team will meet you and give you a local orientation so you can get to know the area you are living in. The next day you will be given health and safety briefing, culture orientation and project training before we take you in for your program.

Weekdays

Your project coordinator or a member of the team will be taking you to the project and after introductions you can get started. All your meals breakfast, lunch and dinner will be the accommodation unless you are at the project site or outside. In the evenings most volunteers spend it either exploring local sights, relaxing at the accommodation or preparing for projects.

Our local team will suggest many activities for you to do! Your weekends will be free for you to explore Cambodia. We highly recommend you to utilise your time so you can get to see more of the country that you are visiting. We usually make recommendations based on past volunteer experiences.
