Special Needs & Disabled Care Volunteer Program in Cambodia

Join our Special Needs & Disabled Care Volunteer Program in Cambodia and make a lasting impact in the lives of children and young adults with disabilities. Based in Phnom Penh, this program gives compassionate volunteers the opportunity to assist local caregivers and teachers at special education centres that support individuals with physical and developmental challenges.

Despite Cambodia’s progress in education and healthcare, support for people with disabilities remains limited, especially in rural and low-income communities. Many families lack access to specialized care or training, which leaves children with disabilities vulnerable to social isolation and neglect. By volunteering in our program, you’ll be contributing to vital services that improve their well-being, education, and quality of life.

This placement is ideal for anyone with a background or interest in special education, social work, psychology, or childcare, as well as caring individuals simply looking to give their time and energy to a worthy cause.

Volunteering in Cambodia is as inspiring as it is impactful. The country is full of friendly people, ancient temples, and lush jungles that reflect both its resilience and beauty. Yet, after decades of hardship following the Khmer Rouge regime, Cambodia still faces widespread poverty and limited access to specialized healthcare.

Mental health and disability care remain highly stigmatized, and qualified professionals are few. By joining this project, you’ll be part of a growing movement that raises awareness, promotes inclusion, and strengthens existing community care systems.

Your time here isn’t just about volunteering — it’s an immersive cultural and humanitarian experience. You’ll work closely with local staff, learn about Cambodia’s rich traditions, and see firsthand how small acts of kindness can create lasting change.

What You’ll Do as a Special Needs Volunteer

As part of our Special Needs and Disabled Care Volunteer Program in Cambodia, you’ll be working in community-based centres and special schools that provide education, therapy, and care for children living with developmental or physical disabilities.

These centres are often underfunded and understaffed, meaning your support as a volunteer makes a real difference. Most children you’ll work with have conditions such as autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, or hearing and speech impairments. Many come from low-income families who cannot afford private therapy or specialized education.

You’ll work closely with local teachers, therapists, and caregivers who are passionate about providing the best possible care and learning opportunities. Your role is to assist them in day-to-day activities, offering hands-on help and emotional support.

Your tasks may include:

  • Assisting teachers with lessons and creative learning activities such as arts, crafts, music, and sensory play.

  • Helping children with motor skill exercises, therapy sessions, or basic physiotherapy (under supervision).

  • Providing one-on-one care for children who need extra attention or mobility assistance.

  • Organizing fun activities that build confidence, coordination, and communication.

  • Helping with feeding, hygiene, and daily routines where needed.

  • Supporting community awareness efforts about disability inclusion and rights.

This program is ideal for those studying or working in education, psychology, occupational therapy, nursing, or social work, as well as anyone who wants to make a meaningful contribution to the lives of others.

Your time and compassion bring not only practical help but also love, patience, and acceptance — qualities that are invaluable to the children and their families.
