Medical Electives in Cambodia
Join our Medical Elective Program in Cambodia and gain valuable clinical experience in one of Southeast Asia’s most fascinating and culturally rich destinations. Cambodia offers a unique opportunity for medical and nursing students to learn about tropical medicine, community healthcare challenges, and the realities of working in a developing healthcare system — all while living in the lively capital city of Phnom Penh.
Cambodia remains one of the poorest countries in Southeast Asia, and healthcare accessibility continues to be a major challenge. The country’s medical infrastructure was severely affected by decades of civil conflict, leaving hospitals underfunded and short-staffed. Today, with limited medical resources and few qualified professionals, hospitals face a high patient load and ongoing public health challenges.
Through this Medical Elective in Cambodia, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the healthcare system in a developing nation while observing and assisting local doctors and nurses as they provide vital care to those in need. You’ll also learn about tropical diseases and health risks common in Cambodia, including malaria, dengue fever, heat-related illnesses, and parasitic infections.
Cambodia’s healthcare system faces daily challenges due to a shortage of skilled professionals and medical infrastructure. By joining, you’ll not only gain a unique insight into global medicine and public health, but also help strengthen community healthcare delivery in areas that need it most.
The experience will broaden your understanding of the medical field — from observing tropical illnesses and emergency response to witnessing the resilience of local medical staff working with limited resources. Many past volunteers describe this program as a life-changing learning experience that helped them develop compassion, cultural awareness, and adaptability.
This program is ideal for:
Medical and Nursing Students seeking elective placements
Pre-Med or Allied Health Students exploring international medicine
Qualified healthcare professionals wanting to share expertise and learn from local practitioners
Medical Electives Abroad - Gain Clinical Experience in Cambodia
What You’ll Do During Your Medical Elective
Your placement will be in one of Phnom Penh’s state-run hospitals, where you’ll have the opportunity to observe and learn across different departments such as:
General Medicine and Surgery
Pediatrics and Maternity
Emergency and Outpatient Clinics
Public Health and Community Outreach Programs
Typical learning activities include:
Shadowing doctors and nurses during ward rounds and outpatient consultations
Observing basic treatments and procedures such as wound care, blood pressure checks, and medication administration
Supporting patient assessments by recording vital signs and updating charts
Participating in health education programs focusing on hygiene, nutrition, and maternal care
Learning how tropical and infectious diseases are diagnosed and managed in resource-limited settings
This elective is primarily observation-based, making it ideal for medical, nursing, and pre-med students. Advanced students may gain more practical exposure under supervision, depending on their skills and the hospital’s discretion.
Typical Day on a Medical Elective in Cambodia
Your Medical Elective in Phnom Penh is centered around gaining meaningful clinical exposure in a busy hospital setting. While your exact duties may vary depending on hospital schedules and department needs, most participants follow a similar weekday routine.
7:00 AM – 7:30 AM | Breakfast & Morning Preparation
Start your day with breakfast at your accommodation. You can review your notes, prepare for your assigned department, or catch up with fellow students before heading to your hospital placement.
8:00 AM – 12:30 PM | Morning Hospital Placement
Arrive at your assigned hospital and report to your designated department. Mornings are typically the busiest time in Cambodian hospitals and clinics, giving you the best opportunity to observe doctors, nurses, and support staff in action.
During this time, you will:
Observe ward rounds and patient consultations with local doctors.
Learn how diagnoses are made and treatments administered in resource-limited settings.
Watch or assist (under supervision) with minor procedures, dressings, or basic patient assessments.
Support hospital teams with patient records, vitals monitoring, and documentation.
Gain exposure to tropical and infectious diseases, maternal health, and general medicine cases.
This portion of your elective is primarily observation-based, allowing you to absorb clinical practices and patient interactions firsthand while respecting local medical protocols.
12:30 PM – 1:30 PM | Lunch Break
Take a well-deserved lunch break, usually at a nearby café, hospital canteen, or one of Phnom Penh’s many food stalls. Lunch hours are flexible and coordinated with your supervising team.
1:30 PM – 3:30 PM | Afternoon Ward Time (Light Schedule)
Afternoons are generally quieter, but depending on your placement and the hospital’s patient flow, you may continue shadowing staff or assisting with light administrative duties. Typical afternoon activities may include:
Observing patient follow-ups or outpatient visits.
Reviewing case notes and learning discussions with local staff.
Supporting data entry or patient record updates if requested by your supervisor.
Some students may also use this time for independent study, reviewing cases they’ve seen in the morning or researching local health conditions with guidance from their mentors.
3:30 PM – 4:00 PM | End of Shift & Return to Accommodation
Most placements end by mid-afternoon. You’ll return to your accommodation by tuk-tuk or taxi (depending on distance).
The rest of your day is free for rest, sightseeing, or exploring Phnom Penh’s cultural attractions — such as the riverside night market, local cafés, or the Royal Palace area.
