A-level results 2026: should you choose Clearing, a gap year or volunteering abroad?
A-level results in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are published on Thursday 13 August 2026. UCAS Clearing is open until 19 October 2026, and applicants receiving results that day can add a Clearing choice from 1pm. If you want to start university this autumn, Clearing can work well when you find a course you genuinely want.

When a gap year may be better
A gap year can make sense if you want to reapply with achieved grades, gain relevant experience or rethink your course. For 2027 entry, UCAS applications are already open and completed applications can be submitted from 1 September 2026. Most medicine and dentistry applications have an equal-consideration deadline of 15 October 2026.
